Johnny Fawbert Trophy

Johnny Fawbert was a local farmer working in East Witton and enjoyed playing for the village quoits team in his spare time. Fifteen years ago, Johnny passed away suddenly and to commemorate his memory the Johnny Fawbert Trophy was created.

The Trophy is presented at a local competition played annually in Masham about the middle of July and is intended for upper dales members only. The match is for individuals rather than teams and generally attracts about 15 entrants. It used to be played some years ago at East Witton but with the demise of the local quoits club, the once captain of the East Witton club came to join Masham Quoits and he brought the Johnny Fawbert Trophy with him to its present home and so that it could live on.

Masham Sports Association was privileged to host  the Johnny Fawbert Trophy and particularly so in July 2011 when Johnny’s son, Chris Fawbert, won his dad’s Trophy!

Chris plays for Kirkby Malzeard and Grewelthorpe teams and it clearly meant a lot to him as he received the coveted Trophy from Peter Iveson. It also rounded off a perfect week as the previous Saturday had been his Wedding Day!
